Sample data
Out of every 100 new guests
80
never came back.
Only 20 came back for a second meal.
Only 6 of those 20 came back a third time. That is the visit where a guest starts to become a regular.

What one guest spends.

What lost first time guests spent on that one visit

A month
$36,288
A year
$435,456

2,400 covers a month. About 22.5 of every 100 are first time guests: 540 covers. 80 of those 100 never come back: 432 covers. At $84 a cover, that is $36,288 a month and $435,456 a year. Based on your covers, your average check and the share of covers that are first time guests. Counting each booking once, that is about 160 lost guests a month. Not all of that comes back. The next card shows what a tenth of it is worth.

If Elite Guests brought back just 10% of them each month

A month
$3,629
A year
$43,546

If Elite Guests brought back just 10% of the guests you lose each month for one more meal, and they spent what they did the first time: about 16 of 160 guests. With the people they bring, that is 43 covers at $84, or $3,629 a month.

Break even: 8 covers back a month. Elite Guests costs $399 a month. 8 covers x $84 = $672 in sales, about $450 after food cost. 10% back is 43 covers, more than you need.

What Elite Guests does

What it is

Elite Guests is a guest list and a texting app for your restaurant. We set it up and we run it for you.

What it does

It keeps the guests who said yes to hearing from you. When a first time guest has not come back, it sends them a text with a reason to come in again. Then it shows you who came back.

What it means for you

You stop losing guests you already paid to get. On your numbers, 8 covers back a month pays the $399. If Elite Guests brought back just 10% of the guests you lose each month, that is about $3,629 a month. You run the kitchen. We do the texting.

8 covers back a month pays for Elite Guests.

Each cover that comes back is worth about $84 to you.

That is 8 people who come back for a second meal.

See how Elite Guests works

480 lost guests said yes to hearing from you.

Over 12 months that is about 1,920 lost guests, counting each booking once. In this sample 1 in 4 said yes to hearing from you: 480 guests. They and the people with them spent about $108,864 on that one visit.

Download the list. We make it on your device. It never goes to us.

What the Lost Guests Report is

The Lost Guests Report is a page, run in your own browser, that reads the guest export from your reservation system and counts how many first time guests came back within 90 days, how many never did, what the ones who never came back spent on that one visit, and how many of them said yes to marketing so you can still reach them. David Media Group built it for restaurant owners who want their own number instead of an industry average.

How it works

  1. Export your guest list. In OpenTable, open Reporting, then the Reservation report, set the last 12 months and turn on the Date and Time and Diner History columns. In Resy, Toast Tables or SevenRooms, export the guestbook or client list.
  2. Upload the file here. The page reads it on your device, finds the first time guests, and counts who came back within 90 days and who never did.
  3. Add your average check. The page turns lost guests into dollars, shows what bringing back one in ten each month would be worth, and lets you download the lost guests who said yes to marketing.

Questions owners ask

Which reservation systems does the Lost Guests Report work with?

OpenTable (the Reservation report or the Guest Frequency export), Resy (the Guestbook export), Toast Tables (the Guestbook export) and SevenRooms (the Clients export), as a CSV or Excel file. Any other guest list works too: the page asks you which columns hold the guest, the visit date or visit count, and the marketing opt in.

Does my guest list get uploaded anywhere?

No. Your browser reads the file on your own computer or phone and never sends it to a server. Nothing leaves your device until you choose to unlock the full report, and then only summary numbers go to David Media Group: your covers, your average check, the return rates and the dollar figures. No guest's name, phone or email is ever sent.

What counts as a guest who never came back?

A first time guest whose first visit is at least 90 days old and who has no second completed visit within 90 days of that first one. Cancelled and no show reservations are not visits. Guests whose first visit is too recent to judge are left out, and so are guests who were already regulars before the export starts.

What is the difference between a guest and a cover?

A guest is the person who booked, together with the people they brought. A cover is one person at one meal. The sample on this page assumes 2.7 covers per guest. Dollar figures multiply covers by your average check per person, or use what your file shows each visit paid when it has that column.

Where does the 8 in 10 benchmark come from?

Bloom Intelligence studied nearly a million first time restaurant guests and found that more than 8 in 10 never returned. The sample on this page uses 80 of every 100 to match. Your own file replaces the sample the moment you upload it.

What is Elite Guests?

Elite Guests is a guest list and texting service from David Media Group. It keeps the guests who said yes to hearing from you, texts a first time guest who has not come back with a reason to return, and shows you who came back. The report on this page shows how many returning covers would pay for it on your own numbers.

What does the Lost Guests Report cost?

Nothing, and there is no account to create. The full report, the lost guest list and the emailed one page summary unlock with your first name, email, restaurant name and city.
